I wasn't even halfway through the book before I was sure I was going to rate it at least 4 stars. Not by default because I'm familiar with and have enjoyed the previous books in the series or even that Guhrke is one of my favorite authors. I knew because this tale was relationship-focused.

There were several aspects of Heiress that appealed to me: the setting (Newport and London societies in the Victorian era), the secret scheme to ruin a villain, a proud heroine afraid to trust her own judgment. But for me the greatest appeal was Jack, earl with a mission and man on the hunt for the love of one woman.

Ah, Jack was a special man. He not only protected Linnet from the machinations of a predator, he also manned up when he created a sticky situation as a result. Except Linnet wasn't too thrilled about that and refused to have him. And for Jack, the chase was on, but not just for challenges' sake but because he fell in love and wanted to be with her. Now that's a heady combination!

Yes, Jack chased and misstepped along the way, but he also got in a lot of swoon-worthy moments like the time he confessed that he wasn't like his fortune-hunter father and brother ("...I've had my share of women, Linnet, I can't deny it, but I've never thought of a woman, any woman, as a toy."). Or when he tried to convince Linette that weighing pros and cons only stirred up self-doubt. Of course, I can't forget his declaration of love nor his hot and heavy erotic confessions. Simply shiver-worthy in the best way. Jack was a man pushed to his limits of control, all to prove his love for one special woman.

I felt kind of like 'you had me at hello' only a hundred times better.

But this story wasn't only about Jack. Linette was the other half to this wonderfully strong couple and deserved props for standing firm for her best interests while navigating ambitious parents and dodging an unwelcome suitor all within the constraints of Victorian society. Having been burned before by love and feeling betrayed by her father greatly influenced her behavior, which added hurdles for herself and Jack.

So, yes, go ahead and read it and see for yourself what a wonderful time you can have and be swept away as I was by Linette and Jack's world.
