Clea Simon's series of Theda Krakow novels is one of my favorite series of books featuring cats. I've read three so far, and I intend to read the entire series and hope she keeps writing them.
This time Theda, who is a freelance Boston journalist, has an assignment to interview several prominent women in the Boston area. Theda is still connected to the music community and has her new kitty, Musetta. In the meantime, expensive show cats are disappearing from catteries and Theda's friend, Rose, who has a cattery, is receiving prank phone calls. It isn't long before Theda's friend is found dead.
This series of mysteries is so informative with the author's knowledge of music and also of cats. Her character, Theda, is a strong, but flawed woman who will fight for what she believes and leads an independent life, yet needs her friends to round out her life. Relating to her is very easy for me because of her love of cats and the dust bunnies under the furniture that she leaves alone if she has other things to do, or if she's tired enough to take a nap.
This isn't really a cozy mystery, but rather a mystery that happens to involve cats and music.

Second in a series, protagonist investigates a murder resulting from suspicions about "kitten mills". Very well done, and the protagonist's career as a rock music critic lends an edginess to the story that keeps it from ever getting too cute.
Although I enjoyed the mystery plot, the book itself was a little slow and included too much about Theda's love life woes.
hard book to get into. Finally gave up.
