I knew you would know Tome Trader, thanks.  I have to admit that I don't know this author. I could have sworn there was a Dickens character named Dorcas. Anyone else know of other Dorcas in other classic literature? It is driving me nuts that I can't remember where else I have heard the name. Suggestions anyone? |

Karen: Maybe you read about her in the Holy Bible, New Testament, Acts of the Apostles Chap. 9 Verse 39? I guess the 'Holy Bible' is classic literature . . . Dorcas was the gal who made coats and garments for widows. (You don't have the name confused with "Dorrit", as in Dickens' Little Dorrit ?) |

I remember reading an Agatha Christie book with that name in it. But not sure which it was. |

We have an very old hardback at our FOL store that I believe is titled "A Boy Named Dorcas". I can check when I'm there next. Also there is this book: Not sure if they are about the same boy or not. Â Â |

Thanks everyone. I do remember the Biblical Dorcas but you have turned up some more for me to look up. I think it was a member of the Order of the Phoenix, Dorcas Meadowes that was floating around in my mind. I do love Harry Potter so that must be where I remembered it from. I name my cats after characters from HP...silly but fun. p.s. There is a Dorcas in Johnny Tremaine, I just found out. Guess there are more than I realized :) Last Edited on: 1/11/10 3:15 PM ET - Total times edited: 1 |

Dorcas was a secretary in Robert A. Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land. She was kind of whimsical and fancy-free, but caring and full of feeling. Miriam was another secretary in the novel so I wonder if Heinlein got the names from the Bible. |

Funny, This thread is a year old, so I am aware that I am reviving it. I've been thinking of this thread because I remember someone asking if they knew of a character named Dorcas, so I just researched it online and found LarkRise to Candleford and posted it here, but I didn't watch the show or read the book. At the time I had no familiarity with Dorcas Lane or Larkrise to Candlford. I just love the BBC shows now. I watch them all the time. Dorcas Lane is my all time favorite characters,
I highly recommend watching Larkrise to Candleford. THe book by Flora Thompson is a lot different though. |

I am interested in reading Larkrise to Candleford. Could you, Tome, or anyone else describe the differences between the show and the book? Are you saying different as in not following the story line or different as in not very good. Just wondering. Maybe I can narrow down the wish list a little, lol. |
