Michael suffered with severe social anxiety. I liked him and ached when he became confused and overwhelmed, especially over his feelings for Caroline. However, Caroline didn't impress me. Although she thought she wore her feelings for him on her sleeve, I felt no warmth from her. Theirs was an odd romance, one that I couldn't really connect with. But since Michael reminded me so much of one of my all-time favorite heroes, Ian MacKenzie from The Madness of Lord Ian MacKenzie by Jennifer Ashley, I give this story 3.5 stars.
