Nevil Shute is a great story-teller, and engages one's interest from the beginning.

It seems many of the fiction novels I read often create tension at some level. Sometimes the tension is so high I have to put the book down and read something else before coming back to it. And so many novelists feel they need to have that level of tension for their books to be popular.

Which is why Nevil Shute's books stand out. It seems to me that no matter what the story line is in his books, no matter how much difficultly the main characters are facing, the tone of his books are so relaxing they just draw you in and you keep turning the pages. And when you are finished one of his books, you sit there with the feeling you've just said goodbye to a close friend.
