I loved this book! The first book of the series really sets it up for the rest. The main character, Chief, is recruited by Robert the Bruce to train a secret army of Highlanders to strike fear in the English. While training these men, Chief's love story unfolds AND you get a little look at each Guard member. Good battle scenes and great chemistry between the hero/herion. Left me waiting on pins and needles for the next book in the series!;D

Being the first in the series gives you the knowledge of what is going on and why. It also gives you the story of a stong woman wanting to be a part of her husbands life and the struggle she has because he is the warrior and women should be seen seldom and have no opinions. It is a wonderful story of their discoveries.

The Chief by Monica McCarty was a GREAT book! I totally got sucked into this story. Tor and Christina's story is exciting, intriguing, and captivating. I absolutely loved the characters. I wanted these two to have a happy ending and I wanted to learn more about the members that Tor was training. It has a "surprise" ending, and it's a lot of fun to get there. This book has put the author at the top of my read list.

This story was better than your average historical/Scottish romance novel. I was totally involved in the characters. This book is a keeper!!!!!!

Note: Sexually explicit material. If it's not your thing, skip this story. It was a hot book.

Monica McCarty does it again! Seems like her Scottish history and insights to way of life are spot-on. She has become my favorite for a steamy romance with great history mixed in!

While I enjoyed this book there were many times when I was tempted to throw it across the room. I liked Tor, I really did, but he irritated me so much I wanted to just shake him. Yes he was supposed to be cold, I even knew the reasons for his thoughts and actions and still I just wanted to slap some sense into him. Make him see (sooner than he did) just what it was he had in his wife. Still he was also crazy handsome, loyal, fierce, and cunning, so you had to love him!

I really expected to dislike Christina as she seemed a bit whiny and almost clingy, but who am I to judge. The poor girl was married to a stranger she just desperately wanted to know. Instead I thought she was dedicated, sweet, smart, humorous, and insanely thoughtful. She gave her heart fully and without remorse despite its not having been earned nor the sad treatment she received. Instead of being annoyed with her I hoped for her and wanted to cheer her on at every turn. She deserved happiness, and she got it, again I just wanted it to come to her sooner.

The action and pacing throughout the book were excellent and suspenseful. The fight scenes were detailed without making one want to skim through it, or confusing to the point that you have no idea whats going on or even who is winning.

I was most impressed though with the author's note at the end to showed to what extent McCarty had done her research and dug into the true histories. She fully explains whats real, what were her dramatizations, and the reasons behind them. When I started this book I thought it was just another romance novel but it seemed incredibly well thought out, researched, and accurate. And I kept having to look up Gaelic words to figure out just what it was they were actually wearing!

I think I will certainly read the next book in the series, The Hawk: A Highland Guard Novel to see what happens to the always glib MacSworley

This was the first Monica McCarty book I've read. I enjoyed the story, a Scottish warrior trains an elite group of fighters to unconventionally and covertly fight for Robert Bruce behind the scenes.
Christina seems a little weak and immature to me, but she is young and Tor is a widower, so she is quite a bit younger than he.
This book is the foundation for subsequent stories about the other men in this team of warriors and I look forward to reading more in this series.
