It is a story of today in which the past is always present and the events of the moment are enriched by the memories of yesterday. Tracey Quin, daughter of a screen-star mother, raised on film lots around the world, has just returned to her adored family home, China Court. But her grandmother's recent death has set off a chain of events that threatens Tracey's future and the very existence of China Court. Merging past with present is a fascinating narrative of love, ambition, and endurance, Rumer Godden has painted a memorable portrait of a century or so in the life of an English family.« less
This book, the tale of China Court -- a country house in Cornwall -- and the five generations of family who have lived in it, is such a charming, lyrical read. This is not a book to charge through, although the story is certainly compelling, but the writing is so magical that it deserves to be meandered through. This book lifted me right out of my life when I was reading it and if this is the sort of book that appeals to you, I think it will work its magic on you too.
