Now Mr Scriven had made up his mind in London that there either actually was, or else was very likely to be, " something on" between Miss Arguelle and Mr Lloyd ; and the rumours he had lately heardof the attentions which the latter was supposed to be paying to Miss Farren had surprised him not a little, for he prided himself on being particularly sharp and accurate in his perception of such matters, and could by no means believe himself to have been altogether mistaken in the present case. He had made up his mind to take the first opportunity of trying to find out whether his judgment had been at fault or not; for though he did not at all want to marry Chloe himself, and had no earthly interest in the state of her affections, yet he was always possessed by an insatiable curiosity about any unpleasant subject that a person might wish to conceal, and by an intense love of ill-natured gossip, which made inquisitions of this kind thoroughly congenial to him.
