This is a somewhat unsettling end to a very good series. I believe Ms. Sedley might not have intended it to end, but then she was 87 when she wrote this book. And, looking at the listing of all her works on Fantastic Fiction, it was the last book she wrote.

But in one way, I thought it was an interesting end to the series, in that Roger is lead completely astray in in his investigation, when even I could see who he really needed to look at. Or did Ms. Sedley deliberately make that obvious to show Roger isn't the cunning investigator we believe him to be.
