I love reading almost anything set in this period. Any recommendations?

Any and all books about the civil war written by Jeff Shaara or his father Michael Shaara.   Michael wrote (I think) two books about the civil war, then he passed away, and his son Jeff continued with the books.   I have read 3 or 4 of them and highly recommend them.

If you enjoyed Paradise Alley by Kevin Baker, there are two other books in the series you could read. The titles are Dreamland and Striver's Row.

I have a copy of The March by EL Doctorow listed on my shelf. It's set during the Civil War and focuses on General Sherman after he burned Atlanta and marched into the Carolinas. I haven't read any of Doctorow's other books, but I enjoyed this one.

I have been on a book binge for several days now and used up all but 1 point. lol. Do you have your books listed on Bookmooch? If you do I have lots of points left there.

I read the Beulah Land series a few years ago and I really enjoyed it. I can't recall the name of the author right now, but I think you might be interested in reading them.

Death of a Mill Girl, Saving Louisa and Die Like a Hero, all by Clyde Linsley. 

There are several copies of The March available here, so no rush. I do have my books on BM,  if you decide you want it. I aways have more points there than here too for some reason. Probably because I don't browse there. I use it just for wishlist books.

I have two very enthusiastic recommendations about the Civil War. One is a book that won many national awards -

MARCH by Geraldine Brooks  This is a novel about the March family from "Little Women" and focus'  on the story of the absent Father and what happens to him as a chaplain in the Civil War. It is beautifully written, historically accurate and one of my favorite books of the last few years.

My other very enthusiastic recommendation is a Civil War series about a fictional character named Abel Jones. They are classified as Mystery/Suspense but these books transcend any kind of classification. The author is OWEN PARRY. The titles in order are:

SHADOWS OF GLORY

CALL EACH RIVER JORDAN

HONORS KINGDOM

BOLD SONS OF ERIN

REBELS IN BABYLON

I love these books. They take you back to the 1860's and make you feel as if you are actually THERE in that time period. These books are simply riveting and powerful. The writing is beautiful and the characters vividly and wonderfully drawn by the author. If you enjoy Civil War stories - do not miss these books.

Lonnie Coleman is the Beaulah Land series author, they are quite old and may be hard to find now.  I too enjoyed them back in the day!  Don't forget Gone With The Wind, it is very good,  takes you from Ante Bellum through Reconstruction, giving a very personal view of the whole timeframe.

Gilead by Marilynne Robinson is a really beautiful book that is tangentially about the Civil War/Reconstruction. The narrator recalls bits of his family's history from the mid nineteenth century. So it's more about the generations that follow, but interesting to see the impact of the the war....
