Wonderful historical easy reader about the first traveling library, called the "bookwagon."

Charming story of a young farm girl who prefers daydreaming to hard work on the farm. Clara is first attracted to books when she encounters them at the country store where the shopowner announces that anyone can borrow them for free. Papa, however, says "no". When the travelling bookwagon meets Clara on her farm, the librarian agrees to talk to Papa about letting Clara learn to read. Set in the midi-late 1800s in Maryland.

This is one of the Sonlight 3rd grade reading selections. It's a very touching book, especially for book lovers. Clara really wants a book but her father discourages her even learning to read because books are expensive and he didn't consider reading a worthy pastime to a farm family. All this changes when she meets the traveling librarian.
