This is a well written book about the friendship of two young girls growing up in Mumbai, India and how they get separated and their lives differ greatly - one to enter the sordid world of human prostitution and the other a life of relative comfort in Los Angeles, USA. Tara, one of the heroines leaves the US to return to Mumbai to find Mukta the other heroine. The story is well narrated and well plotted. Good Read.

This is a story about friendship, but it is so much more than that. The father's character has a depth which is explored even after his death, his reasons and his choices in life. The book sheds a light on the caste system and prostitution in India. It does so in a manner which is not overly graphic, but enough to make its point. There is a larger picture, though, of how we treat the least of these and those we deem unworthy and an encouragement to research what each of us can do for change.
