This is unexpectedly one of the best books I have read in a long time. This book is filled with the real-life experiences of an assortment of heroic young women who served as nurses in World War II. Many more, of course, could not be mentioned by name.
Nurses served valiently on hospital ships, on airplanes as flight nurses, and on the ground virtually at the front lines, within sight and sound of the missles, bombs and bullets, along side the doctors and corpsmen who rescued and ministered to the wounded soldiers. None were drafted; all were volunteers. Some were wounded, some taken prisoner of war, some were killed in the line of duty, and one even had the honor of having a hospital ship named after her posthumously.
This book completely opened my eyes to these remarkable and (at least to me, prior to reading this book) unsung women hereoes of the war. Wow. I couldn't put down this wonderful and important book.
