WOLFFGANG, C. 1737-9 From a copy in the possession of Wm. C. Smith THIS BOOK IS PUBLISHED IN COMPLETE CONFORMITY WITH THE AUTHORIZED ECONOMY STAND \ RDS First Published ig$ PRINTED IN GREAT BRITAIN BY EBENEZER BAYLIS AND SON, LTD., THE TRINITY PRESS, WORCESTER, AND LONDON To my Wife FOREWORD To love the music of Handel so often provokes an Interest la the man who composed It. An Inquiring interest. Therefore one wishes to know something about this figure of genius his method of work, his habits, his association with so many people of his time, both worthy and unworthy. This desire on the part of many has already been supplied by the several lives of the Master which have appeared. But the author of this book has gone further. The biographer, in dealing with Handel's extensive life, finds it impossible to go into all the by-ways of that life. The author of this book has done so. He has given much which the biographers have not included. By his erudition he has discovered facts which the biographers did not know. The author, in his ardour as a Handelian, a collector of Handeliana, as occupant of the post of Assistant Keeper of Printed Books in the British Museum for so many years, has delved deeper than many biographers into certain matters that concern Handel. His chapter on Handel's finances is the most complete summary of the subject. It could be presented only by infinite and long-time research. I doubt if the years in their passing can correct it at all. Again, his information on HandePs publishers that jig-saw puzzle to Handel's bio graphers he has spent years in sorting out. And he has sorted it out. His new letters of Handel, his chapter on the first editions of Messiah these are all matters of first importance in searching into the inner life of Handel. As a Handelian, I say that this book is most necessary to those who would study the measure of this man. Its erudition is brilliant. Its recordings must remain as an advance in our knowledge of Handel. Step by step we grow the closer to him as new discoveries are made. A finer shaping comes to the great figure; a greater humanism as every new fact is re vealed. CONCERNING HANDEL This is not a book for Handelians alone. It is for those who, appreciating the music of Handel, wish to know something behind the scenes about him and his ventures. To them all I commend it. NEWMAN FLOWER.
