The nineteenth century relegated fairy tales to the nursery; during the twentieth century it became fashionable to interpret them psychologically. Writers of earlier times were less constrained. The fairies of Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream, for example, inhabit a sovereign domain. How will the twenty first century relate to the realm of fairy? These tales are essays in response. The book contains as a bonus an original translation of "The Fairies" by Ludwig Tieck. Bruce Donehower lives in northern California. He has a Ph.D. in English and a Masters in German literature and teaches in the University Writing Program at the University of California, Davis. In addition to writing and teaching, Bruce plays the classical guitar and practices Aikido.
