Sunracer Publications of Tucson published several guidebooks and I obtained this for 'armchair' travelers in the old soldiers' home. Travel magazines seem to be of little interest here, even among visitors and staff, but this is well edited. It is mostly text (some in Spanish) accompanied by illustrations, maps, and a few graphs (elevation profiles). The first third of the book deals with the scenic railroad opened in 1961 and the geography. The last third describes other interesting places to visit in Chihuahua and the middle third considers the Tarahumara, famous for their practice of long runs.
Thus there is an emphasis on the Tarahumaras (Raramuri), who have maintained their culture even as mestizos settled on the more productive lands.
"The value they place on persons over objects is practiced with their children as well. These are never chastised, and from the time they are very small they are given the responsibility of making decisions for themselves. They are considered to be adults in the community when they are twelve or thirteen years old."
Although published in 1999, there seem to be no cautions about the risks of traveling here and it is arguable that 'armchair' travel has its advantages. The Revolution of 1910 seems to be ignored by the authors. Mr. Fisher, an experienced backpacker, is forthright about the considerable difficulties to be encountered in scenic mountain areas.
Bibliography, but no index (so I deducted one star).
