The story of daughter Phano is set in ancient Athens. The twists and turns her life takes are based on her mother having been a courtesan before making a respectable marriage. Phano in love is also Phano who is faced with threats of being brought into slavery by a man who claims he owns her. The background of the story is a fascinating glimpse of the social life, culture, politics and religion of Greece in that era.
