It's such a great pity that when the writing of the father-son team starts to get better, the father passes away. So far this is the best of the books that Dick & Felix wrote after the long hiatus when Dick's wife (who collaborated on his books) died, and if Felix continues to write on his own I just hope he inherits his parents' talent. Tom Forsythe is a soldier in Afghanistan who comes home when an IED blows his foot off. After rehab he has nowhere to go but back to his mother & stepfather's home where he is neither welcome nor comfortable. His mother, an award-winning steeplechase trainer, has been having trouble with her horses inexplicably losing, and Tom discovers that she is being blackmailed for years of tax evasion. Against his mother's wishes Tom investigates, and when an attempt is made at his life he calls upon all his training to outwit a murdering blackmailer and get his mother out of trouble. This almost feels like the Francis books of old, and here's crossing fingers that Felix continues and maintains his parents' legacy.

Dick & his son Felix Francis write good stories. They're interesting, the characters are well developed and the heroes are worth rooting for, plus the suspence is riveting.
