I have not yet seen the book but would like to read certain chapters as it praised both for its scholarship and readability in a review in The Economist, p. 67, 17 October 2020, 'The Road to Camelot.' Dr. Logevall spent a great deal of time in the archives to get behind what the reviewer calls JFK being 'surrounded by legends.' The author is even handed, for example when considering Joe Kennedy's business dealings and right wing beliefs; Logevall asks how many such men fostered their children to contribute to the world?
I myself do not consider JFK to be a great president. I was well into my junior year of high school and still 15 years old at the start of December, 1962, when I worried that he was going to get us into a war to maintain the rulers of the largely Buddhist nation of South Vietnam. I do think of him every year on November 22nd (seemingly few do) and it was truly a bright and shiny time of hope.
