For me, they conjure up visions of the Poem of El Cid, of Bulwer Lyttons Leila: The Siege of Grenada; of C. S. Foresters The Gun; of the days of Don Quixote and Gil Blas. This is truly an American masterpiece of travel, history, and legend in a fascinating little package.
