It's been a while since I read one of Rendell's Inspector Wexford novels. A elderly wealthy man is ruled to have died accidentally two days before his wedding. But the bride says the long-estranged daughter who inherited is not really his daughter. Wexford becomes obsessed by finding the truth. Excellently plotted, lots of twists and turns, great ending. Wexford and his wife travel to California during the novel, it's fun to read his impressions of the state. Not a problem for new readers, although I did feel like I was missing some background on Burden.
