This book features an interesting personal detective whose strange humor makes one laugh again and again. The second in a series with Sidney Grice, the protagonist, finds that his âwardâ, March Middleton, more than capable to respond to his odd comments with quick responses. Nevertheless, Grice is as difficult to understand as ever and just as arrogant about his investigative talent.

Apparently this book begins where the first book ends when Grice solved a case too late and put an innocent man in prison as the guilty party escaped. His reputation is suffering as London residents appear to laugh at his efforts.

The current case involves members of the Final Death Society. One member, seeking to engage services of Grice and Middleton, dies as they discuss his concerns. Each succeeding contact likewise dies within their presence as the tale unfolds slowly. He knows he must find the murderer/s before they kill Baroness Foskett, who founded the group. March has her own problems coping with her fiance's death while assisting Grice. Murders become more violent and Grice feels that this could be a personal effort aimed at him. Only time will reveal the truth and whether Grice and March can unveil the culprit/s. It's a complex and well written novel with many twists with two wonderfully drawn characters. Most entertaining.
