When you think of America's war in the Pacific during World War II, you don't often think of tanks. Yet they were there. And here is a great but simple memoir of a man who was a Sherman tank driver and then tank commander during the invasions of the Philippines and Okinawa.

No pretensions, no heroics, just a simple narrative of a man and his buddies trying to stay alive, while helping each other win and survive the war.

The book covers his early life, his entry into the National Guard before the war as an infantryman, his transfer to the armored forces and his concerns about entering combat.

Some of the most interesting sections deal with his being wounded, the time spent in hospital and his recovery. A very human story by a man from the Greatest Generation who when asked by his company commander if he wanted a medal requested the Good Conduct Medal.
