One of Innes' very best, a peculiar ghost story with a lot of humor. Inspector Hudspith is obsessed with tracking the abduction of girls into prostitution, and here finds a young woman with multiple personalities has been lured away to South America. Inspector Appleby is sent to the north of England to look into the theft of an apparently mind-reading cab horse. The two inspectors eventually voyage to the depths of the Amazon jungle where the horse, the girl and a haunted house have been taken as part of a wicked scheme by a power mad tycoon.
