This author wrote a pair of novellas about the McCoy brothers. This is the first story (see below), which takes place near the end of the Civil War.

Amazingly, in only 120 pages, the author tells a complete story. Daniel, a Confederate prisoner, escapes from a Union prison. He has served as a medic to his Confederate co-prisoners. He's exceptionally thirsty and stops at a farm to ask for a drink of well water. However, the young child points a gun at him and tells him to leave. The other children, who are much younger, ask Daniel if he can tend to their mother because she cut her leg while chopping wood. It is touch-and-go because the wound has festered.

Rosemarie is no more pleased to see the Rebel in her home than her children. A group of Rebels had robbed the family of all the food and animals they could find and shot the children's father. Daniel's kindness is in sharp contrast to Hans (the deceased father), who was cold to his wife and children. When Union soldiers come looking for Daniel, Rosemarie hides him. Later, when Daniel is caught and set to hang, Rosemarie goes to the man she used to work for (now governor of the state) to help her save Daniel.
