In Dark Time, Dakota Banks gets down to the nitty-gritty. She holds nothing back in the details whether it's a city Maliha is working in, out on an assassin's mission or reliving Mahilia's burning at the stake as an accused witch. This is not a novel that paints a pretty picture but one that is full of the very real complicated feelings of a woman trying to redeem herself for her past sins and working towards ensuring a better future for all of mankind - hopefully without the presence of the demons such as Rabishu and his brethren. While she is trying to redeem herself, she questions whether she will ever have some semblance of normalcy such as having a family. She wonders if this is something she should even allow herself to dream about, especially with DEA agent Jake Stackman.
I liked the way the novel went back and forth between time periods in Maliha's life. This helped give me a good understanding to how Maliha went from a cold-hearted assassin to the moment when her heart started to warm up again. The flashbacks helped solidify Maliha's relationships with the secondary characters, made you feel closer to her and her friends while intensifying the feelings of disgust and dislike for the Rabishu and the other vile characters in the story. They also show how Maliha became the self-confident, strong woman she is in present day, who is self assured in her own skills to take care of herself and those around her.
Dark Time was an intense dark read for me, which I enjoyed very much since it's my favorite kind of reading. It reads like a paranormal Mission Impossible assignment, at least that's how I kept seeing things in my mind's eye because of the detailed descriptions of the weaponry and gadgets used by Maliha and other characters throughout the story.
The romance in this book takes a backseat to action, though it's not without a few passionate moments. I liked that the villains are truly evil because this means no easy way out for the good guys and it thickens the plot. But be warned, this book ends with a cliffhanger. So if you're looking for a fast paced read that is very dark in nature, that makes no apologies, has a kick-ass heroine and a solid storyline, then this book is for you. I'll be on the lookout for Sacrifice, the second book in the Mortal Path series. Due to the cliffhanger, I HAVE TO KNOW what happens next!

Urban Fantasy, first in series by Dakota Banks. In the 1600's, Susannah was happily married, and pregnant with her first child. Then she's accused of being a witch, and burned at the stake. But, she's offered a chance to live, if she agrees to be the servant of a Demon. Filled with bitterness and with a need for revenge, Susannah agrees. As the immortal assassin of a Demon, she is responsible for many deaths. Susannah becomes tired of that existance and wants to redeem herself. In order to do so, she has to save as many lives as she's taken, before dying, or suffer for eternity. The writing is good, the plot is solid, with lots of action, and interesting characters. The ending leaves me looking for the second book. Worth a credit.
Rarely do I have trouble getting into a book and have it keep my interest, basically I'm pretty easy to write for and to get along with but Dark Time just threw me for a loop. I don't mind the building up of characters but the truth is that I had no more an idea about the main character even after several chapters of telling just about her killing for the demon and her own inhibitions then her bargain for freedom, then we are thrust into the present where we are suddenly introduced to new characters that we are slowly introduced to and well for me the book didn't grab my attention although I tried to struggle through it hoping for a better story to emerge, perhaps it did I just didn't care enough to read any more of the book after 150 pages.
This whole book is about how Maliha Crayne wants to break her deal with a demon. She made the choice to live forever, but do his bidding. Now, it is weighing on her damned soul and she wants to undo it. There is only one way to break out, to save a life for everyone she has taken, before her time runs out.
Great concept, pretty good ending, can't wait to see what the author has next.
Urban fantasy, right on......not a bad read, keeps u reading on to the next chapter, etc. I see a little deviation from what I normally read in this genre, but still highly recommend it..the recommending authors of Rollins, Preston-Childs, Steve berry (of ones i have read) recommend this book, as it has lot of archeology, ancient history(which I like anyway). All in all a great read, and am looking forward to reading 2nd in this series. and gave it a 4 star rating.
After being accused of witchcraft and burned at the stake, Susannah makes a deal with a demon for immortality. After she kills the skank who accused her, she begins her life of servitude to Rabishu. After 263 years of killing, Susannah discovers a loophole in her demon contract. In order to escape eternal torture by Rabishu, she must save a life for each that she has taken. As a mortal, this becomes a real issue since is she dies before she's achieved the balance, she will still be Rabishu's play thing. Kind of a catch-22 but worth the effort in Susannah's eyes and to her soul.
Maliha (as she calls herself in this century) is part James Bond, part Indiana Jones, part Karate Kid. This sounds like it would be a great book but after the well-paced and exciting beginning, the story drags on and on about the death of two computer hackers and two technology companies. If she's supposed to be saving lives, what is she doing chasing down dead people? I just couldn't find the connection and it was just plain boring besides. I had to force myself to finish this book as it wasn't anything like I expected. Though I must admit that I almost want to find out how Jack got inside her safe house but not enough to suffer through another installment.

I found this book incredibly weird and boring at the same time. The main characters name changed so many times I had trouble keeping track of her. Susannah is a herbal healer in the new world around the times of the witch trials. She is accused of being a witch while pregnant and put on trial where she is condemned to die by fire. She delivers her baby the day before her execution but without help the baby dies. They burn her and then a demon offers her the deal of a lifetime revenge and immortality on its not all its cracked up to be. Hundreds of years later she is unhappy with herself and must do something about it so she goes back on her deal and has to save a life for every one she has taken before she dies. Ok well not a bad story line I thought. However the book skips around from time period to time period introducing all of the characters as we go letting you know how she met them. Which was totally annoying every time I was getting into the story this would happened and Id be about to pull my hair. Plus she seems to just sleep around willy nilly with whomever Im not sure I liked that. I found it hard to get a grip on the story with the time flow though and ended up not enjoying it and the ending what ending!
A good start to a series. Like the story telling. It let you get to know the character well and pulled you into the story. Even with the enhanced abilities, you can identify with the heroine. The story leaves you with a wanting more cliffhanger that has me anxious to get to the sequel.
Unique. It takes awhile to get into this book as there is lots of world building, but it"s worth it.
