Well written... I am just not a great fan of war-time reminiscences.

I am not usually a short story reader, or a reader of literary fiction for that matter, but there is something very compelling about Temptleton's writing. I picked the book up for a peek and ended up reading the title story in a fast gulp. The rest I dabbled through more slowly. Europe in the first half of the twentieth century had such a strong, particular flavor to it, and it sings through these stories (which is not surprising from a good author who seems to have lived in so many parts of it!). The prose is not flowery or overly verbose, but very well nuanced -- I suppose that would be ideal for short stories. Very interesting book, especially for the ambience.
