So that you know: These three books should be read in order (see below). I didn't think the author could develop a story to match (in drama and pathos) the first book. I was wrong. Both of the main characters are flawed but strong people who have had much difficulty in their lives. This book explores complicated family relationships and complex characters.

Madelyn Caulfield was defiant to her family, and they married her off to a vicious man who eventually died and left her in peace. She lives in the Dower House in Ashmead. Because of her awful experiences, she trusts no one but herself. In the first story (see below), the reader is introduced to Brynn Morgan. He is a soldier friend of Rob Benson's who helped him in Book 1. He is very attracted to Madelyn but has nothing to offer Duchess Maddy.

A strange man comes to the area making demands that threaten to destroy Maddy's peace and her stepsons. Looking for a son, thought long-dead, brings havoc to everyone. It also sends them to investigate the family's mines. Finally, it takes Brynn back to his home in Wales. Both Brynn and Maddy must face some brutal truths.
