Giles Blunt writes of life in a small north Canadian town, with police detectives John Cardinal and Lisa Delorme. His plots are carefully and thoroughly developed, with some complexity and understanding of human nature. The police are competent and decent. The weather plays a large role in Blunt's stories. I have enjoyed all of his books. This one features gangs, and losers, and violent inhumane people! His first mystery; FORTY WORDS OF SORROW was a super book. Cardinal has his own personal devils to deal with, and these are a sub-theme in the books.

This is a mystery based in Canada. I didn't even get far enough into it to figure out the storyline. I just couldn't get past the animosity between the local police, the RCMP and the CSIS (some kind of terrorism squad). I found it rather tedious and boring. None of the characters are likeable and I found myself not caring one way or the other what happened. To me that is the kiss of death. This is the first book I've "read" by this author and it will be the last.

I thought this was much weaker than Forty Words for Sorrow.

I just couldn't get into this book no matter how hard I tried to continue reading it! If a book doesn't draw me in and make me feel like I don't want to put it down then to me that is not the book for me! Others may like it. I just couldn't finish it!

Detectives Cardinal and Delorme in peaceful Algonquin Bay, Canada, have to figure out who the half-eaten body parts belong to that were found in the woods. Luckily, the bears left enough to enable them to determine that the older man was killed first, then fed to the bears. A short time later the naked body of a young woman is found. The crimes must be related, but the two victims have nothing in common.

This is a mystery with nicely drawn characters, and an interesting story. In order to solve the murders, the detectives must delve into Canada's history, and reveal what truly happened in the 1970s, when there was a strong effort by terrorists to establish a separate, French-speaking Quebec. The ending is ultimately somewhat disappointing, though.
