For the reader, it is interesting to watch Maigret at work without all his Paris resources; 2: The Rheingold route by Arthur Maling (1979): In a departure from his Brock Peters series, Maling has introduced John Cochran, former U. S. Treasury Department employee who lost his job, came to England, and was forced by need to sign on as a paid smuggler of British pounds to Switzerland. For several years he went back and forth with sizable amounts. But finally a phone call from another would-be-smuggler suggested they make a deal. Cochran was soon caught between the prospect of a lifetime in jail, or no lifetime at all, or both; 3: The Murder of Miranda by Margaret Millar (1979): This who-dunit takes place in a small town country club setting. The cast of characters include both colorful and typical club types, but there are several among them, plus the lifeguard, who take action even to the point of murder to get what they want.« less
