This is not my type of book at all; clairvoyants are not my cup of tea. However, the author immediately captured my attention, and I thought I would just read a bit more. However, I was hooked and read the whole book in a matter of hours. Ellen Nightingale is involved in a murder investigation because she finds the body of her family friend and bookseller, George Nicholson. Scotland Yard Inspector Grayson Fletcher is immediately enchanted with Ellen.

Before long, Fletcher realizes Ellen has the same talent as his aunt, who slipped in and out of trance-like states. He and his family did not appreciate this aunt's insights, but considered her strange. However, Fletcher realizes that Ellen's insights can help him with the investigation of George's death. The rest of the Nightingales also have varying degrees of special skills, which surprises Fletcher.

Ellen and the rest of the Nightingale siblings are outcasts from polite society because their father killed himself; he destroyed the family's future through his gambling, etc. Ellen avoids society. Fletcher is also an aristocrat. He chose to leave his family and become a Scotland Yard detective when his aunt and uncle left him their house and money.

There is a great deal of emotional growth and learning in this story. Ellen, because her fiancé abandoned her after her father's death, thinks she will never marry. The Nightingale's uncle and aunt teach the Nightingale siblings how to protect themselves. This book is consistently entertaining and engaging.
