This book received numerous positive reviews from national newpaper and magazine reviewers.

Set in the period of the 2000 presidential election day and the subsequent Supreme Court ruling on that election several weeks later, the book's plot is based on a nonexistent screenplay for which all of the characters have personal goals and plans. The development of the story reveals greed, uncontrolled ambition, and the degree to which people will exploit others for their own success in life.

Each chapter is devoted to a character and we learn through funny, energetic, and rich prose much about the individual's flaws as well as universal traits. It is an active exercise of viewing aspects of human nature in an original way.

Rick Moody, the author of THE ICE STORM, returns to fiction with THE DIVINERS, which examines the emptiness that lies at the heart of the oversized, overblown ambitions of the American entertainment industry.
