The true life story of a dog who changed everything for one woman. For the first time in my life, I didn't need to pretend, I didn't need to be tough: I only needed to be honest. "I have cerebral palsy. I walk funny and my balance is bad. I fall a lot. My hands shake, too. That means I'm not so good at carrying things. And if I drop s...  more »

A Dog Named Slugger is the story of a yellow Lab mobility assistance dog and his partner Leigh. Slugger is Leigh's first service dog, so the reader is privy to all of Leigh's emotional ups and downs as she decides if a service dog might be useful. We follow their training together, as Leigh's perfectionist tendencies calm, and her normal new handler fears about her new partner are alleviated. The book continues through Leigh and Slugger's long partnership, Slugger's retirement, Leigh's struggle whether or not to partner with another SD, and Slugger's death. The tone of the story stays hopeful, despite some of the difficult times Leigh and Slugger go through. Any dog lover will enjoy this story and the lessons of partnership, faith, perseverance, and inter/independence included within.

After acquiring a yellow lab puppy 3 months ago I saw this book offered for free on Borders.com & added it to my shelf. Recently as I was looking for a quick read I came across it again and began reading it. It was a good read, informative, humorous & it pulled at my heart strings. I saw a lot of the antics Slugger pulled as the same as my puppy Lilly does. I would really like to give the rating 3 1/2 stars just because the writing language was somewhat juvenile but I bumped it to 4 stars because I did end up enjoying it( and sobbing as well).

What a cute and heartwarming little story. I was blessed to receive it through NetGalley and loved every page of the story. Being a dog owner for just under a year, I am enjoying stories pertaining to dogs more and more. I love hearing about other breed's personalities and am touched beyond belief when I hear of a dog's aging and eventual passing. It breaks my heart becuase I know that our pup - Miss Charlotte has become more than a dog - a family member.

OK - enough with the sappiness. This was a great story to educate everyone on the different ways people can benefit from a service dog. In the book, Brill speaks to an auditorium full of children, one of the first questions she receives is - Are you blind - I thought service dogs were just for blind people. To be honest - so did I. I loved hearing how these dogs can be used for various disabilities.

I would pass this onto my friends who are dog lovers, who love stories about people overcoming disabilities in different ways and those who like to hear an uplifting story that is absolutely true.

I absolutely loved this book even though it made me cry oceans of tears. It's a heartwarming tribute to Leigh Brill's first service dog. Anyone dealing with a mobility issue will identify with the story as will dog lovers. If you liked Marley and Me, you'll like this story.
