Every dog-lover worth the name thinks of his dog as honorary human, but how many realize that their pets see them as honorary dogs: as pack-leaders who must be respected, followed and obeyed? Man's own view of himself as dog's master would be worthless if the dog did not agree. And, if it had not been for this ancient agreement, man's best friend would never have come on the scene at all.
All along, dogs have offered their masters amazing quantities of loyalty, friendship and willingness to help; at last, the friendship is being returned. On top of that, we are finally beginning to appreciate just how much dogs have been contributing to the alliance, and for how long. We have begun to pay off the debt - but, generous as ever, dogs are not pressing for payment and dog-owners will agree that its patience does them honour.
