This book has several main character with some character development and simple plots. Perfect for the second grade reader. Chapters are 3-4 pages long with one page a full size illustration in each chapter. font is a larger size and less intimidating.
The chracaters are likeable and the unique combination of magic and mystery kept my picky almost 8 year old reading independently each day.

This was a fun and exciting book. The illustrations (done by Katherine Coville) add to the appeal.
