The Arthurian legend retold as a mighty epic starting with the dawn of time. Beautifully written this book takes you deep into the world of mythology, ancient magic, and history. This is the first of three. The others are The Eagle and the Sword(2) and the Wolf and the Crown (3). Best read in order. This is the story of battling gods, destiny, Merlin, Uther, ending with the birth of Arthur.
"There is only one Dragon. It lives inside the earth and is as huge as the whole planet." And so starts off this amazing retelling of the events surrounding the birth of the boy who would become king Arthur. Imagine starting out with a universe, and narrowing gradually down to a simple birth. All guided by words as descriptive and flowing as anything you will ever read.
I first picked up this book thinking, "Hmm, cool title. A dragon and a unicorn intertwined...kinda weird though." In fact I didn't even read it for around six months. I finally got bored enough to start, and couldn't stop.

Beneath every beloved legend there is a deeper legend still, etched in ancient stone. The Dragon and the Unicorn begins before the beginning of Time, as light first cools to matter, bearing within it the electron glow of lost Heaven. Attanasio's epic tale of a quest for immortality spans all history, human and demihuman, from the dung fires on the steppes to the snows of the Himalayas, from the mudhut cities on the Euphrates to the glass and steel towers of tomorrow, from the hunt for the Unicorn's horn to the ceaseless wars of elf and dragon, Celt and Roman. It is a quest that ends--and begins--in a legend-heavy place at the edge of the Western Sea, with the first cry of a King new born. A place called Tintagel. A King, the heir Pendragon, called Eagle of Thor, or... Arthor.
