DRAMA CITY is a terrific insightful thriller that focuses on how difficult it is for someone to stay straight when they return to the same neighborhood that incubated their criminal behavior. The story line mostly follows Lorenzo as he tries to remain out of trouble, but wonders if the local mantra once a player always a player is a truism. George Pelecanos provides a thought provoking thriller on struggling to stay alive while going straight.
Not my cup of tea: This is a gritty book; The lives of the characters are depressing
Graphic violence and sex--also not a problem, IF (and only if) the book is well written.
Therein lies the rub.
If you want verisimilitude in a crime mystery novel that includes the African American experience and characters you can believe and feel for, read WALTER MOSLEY.

I enjoyed this book, especially because it is set in the D.C. Metropolitan area.
