Rachel Robinson travels from her home in the Kentucky hills to meet and live with the man she has married by proxy. However, Major Shelby Bruckenridge is a vicious man who plans to use and abuse Rachel. The tiny redhead manages to escape her fate on her wedding night and Rachel starts to walk back to Kentucky.

Along the way, Rachel walks into a Cheyenne village and meets Strong Elk, who distrusts whites. He has good reason; he has served as a US Army scout for several years and has seen whites at their worst.

Strong Elk tells her that none of the Cheyenne have the time to take her back to Kentucky because they are on their way to the summer hunting grounds. They must gather food for the coming winter. He offers to accommodate her with traveling companions in the spring.

This story is very interesting because of the research that the author obviously has done on the Cheyenne. However, she explained the Cheyenne culture in an interesting way, that helped move the story along.

I think the author made Rachel talk in such a backward way so that she didn't seem too socially advanced. Thus, the gap between Strong Elk and Rachel did not seem too vast for them to overcome their cultural/social differences.
