Excellent story. A old man looking back on his life and pondering at the roads not taken and choices made. Gothic creepy story.

Very interesting, not at all what I expected, but nonetheless it is a different book and if your TBR is not too full or you want a change of pace this is the book to pick up, starts with a murder but slowly evolves to the historial remembrance of an old man. An interesting read.

Opening with a murder confession, the narrator goes back 50 years to begin the tale of events that lead to his wife's death. The love story of James and Ella is, like most first love, intense. It's full of joyful exuberance and horrifying deceit and manipulation.
There's one 'prove your love' pact between the young lovers that I found particularly painful. And I couldn't quite figure why James loved Ella so much. But young love often makes no sense.
I was surprised by the ending but in retrospect I should have seen it coming as it was foreshadowed heavily.
My first from this author.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. The characters were solidly drawn and the plot was quite interesting, if not altogether unpredictable. The structure of the novel was interesting, but left some loose ends since the audience of the narrator was never revealed. Still, it was entertaining and all the more impressive considering the youth of the author.

Slow start but once it picks up it is really pretty good.
