A tale of infuriating obstinacy, pitting one generation against another. The miseries and difficulties of family life make the affairs of parliament seem eminently reasonable. As is usual with Trollope, the hunting scenes are detailed, and the horse-racing episodes sketchy, reflecting his own interests and pursuits.

(This copy lacks a dust-jacket. The cover is dark brown, and the title appears on the spine in gilt lettering against a rose background. This is the 1973 edition of the Palliser novels.)
