The death of internal affairs investigator Andy Fallon is a potential political bomb for the Minneapolis Police Department. Andy Fallon was gay, and he was investigating a possible cop connection in the brutal murder of another gay officer. But Andy's death looks like suicide - or an unfortunate and embarrassing accident: death by auto-erotic misadventure - and the pressure is on from the top brass to close the case as soon as possible. But Andy Fallon's ex-lover doesn't believe Andy died by his own hand - accidentally or otherwise. He believes Andy's death is tied to his work, and he presses lead detective Sam Kovac to find another answer - one that won't be popular with anyone. With the help of Amanda Savard, Fallon's supervisor, Kovac begins to investigate the cases that Andy was working on and the deeper he digs, the more suspicious he becomes. It begins to look as if Andy Fallon might have hit on something that got him killed. And Andy might not be the final victim . . . As Ko vac and his partner, Tinks Liska, peel back the layers of this complex case, they will find their careers and their lives on the line, because someone wants the truth left dead and buried. Ashes to ashes, and dust to dust.

Veteran cop Sam Kovac and partner Nikki Liska are investigating several things at once. An internal affairs cop dead of apparent suicide, a paraplegic cop dead of apparent suicide, a 20 year old murder where one of the current victims was a victim, a closed case of a homosexual cops brutal murder and the fun just keeps coming. Sam and Liska may be partners but they investigate different aspects of these cases and rarely actually work together which I found strange. I listened to the audiobook which was unabridged but it still seemed at times that key things were skipped. By this I mean, one or the other would find something out without the partner present, yet in the next scene, the other knew about it and they had never discussed the event. Sam and Liska apparently had conversations that weren't written as part of the novel. Really weird and disconcerting.

Tami Hoag doesn't skimp on the graphic details but to lessen the impact, she quickly follows up with smart aleck comments from both Kovac and Liska. She writes using a wonderful mix of humor and horror. Another wonderfully plotted mystery with twists, turns and surprises.

Andy Fallon is a gay Minneapolis police officer A week after he is found hanging in his bedroom his father, Iron Mike Fallon, a former cop and Andy's father, shoots himself . Detectives Nikki Liska and Sam Kovac consider the circumstances suspicious believe there is soemthing not-quite-pright about the speedy closing of both cases. They continue to investigating, causing others to react to with fear, anger, and even attempted murder. It seems as if people are hiding something about the deaths, and unexpected individuals appear to be connected. Hoag tells a riveting story that evolves slowly and tantalizingly. Her characters are well drawn. This is a great read!

Minneapolis has more than its share of interesting cops (Lucas Davenport of the John Sandford thrillers, for one), and Tami Hoag's homicide dicks, Sam Kovac and Nikki Liska, join the club in this thoughtful and surprisingly moving novel of dirty cops and cover-ups. Internal Affairs investigator Andy Fallon is a suicide--or is he? The word around the department is that Andy, son of Iron Mike Fallon, an old hero of Sam's, killed himself because Mike turned his back on him when Andy told him he was gay. Or maybe it was because a lover dumped him, or even (snicker, snicker) a perverted sexual practice gone wrong. That's the gossip, but Sam feels he owes it to Mike to investigate.

Sam is a familiar type in this genre, and his self-awareness is almost painful at times. "You're a stereotype. The tragic hero," he's told by Amanda Savard, the strong-but-vulnerable Internal Affairs lieutenant whose determination to keep the Fallon case closed foreshadows her personal history. "The twice-divorced, smoking, drinking workaholic," Sam agrees. "I don't know what's heroic about that. It reeks of failure to me, but maybe I have unrealistic standards." But Sam's droll sense of humor is matched by his deeply ingrained crap detector. When Iron Mike apparently kills himself too, you can almost feel its needle vibrate. Then Sam and Nikki open another closed case, this one almost two decades old, and find the connections that threaten to unravel past crimes and future promises. Hoag is a writer very much in command of her craft: the pacing excels, the characters are complex and interesting, and the details well worked out. Readers will look forward to another Kovac and Liska adventure

Internal Affairs cop Andy Fallon is found dead in his home, hanging naked in his bedroom. The word "sorry" is written on the mirror. Was it suicide? An accident? Detectives Sam Kovac and Nikki Liska interview friends and family. Andy had been depressed after coming out to his father. He was also looking into a case where a gay detective had been murdered. The department orders a quick autopsy and Andy's case is declared an accident, but instinct tells Kovac and Liska that there is more going on than meets the eye.

This is the second book in the Kovac/Liska series. It pulls you in from the beginning. Did Andy kill himself or was it a murder? Does his death have something to do with a 20-year-old case where a cop was murdered and another, Andy's own father, was left paralyzed? Or could it be Andy's current case where a gay detective was bludgeoned to death? We're given lots of clues, enough to actually figure out what happened to Andy, and what happened to his father 20 years ago. My rating: 4 Stars.

Sorry. The single word was written on the mirror. In front of it hung the body of Andy Fallon, a Minneapolis Internal Affairs cop. Was it suicide? Or a kinky act turned tragic? Either way, his death wasn't a crime. The investigation will be a formality, a duty that veteran homicide detective Sam Kovac isn't looking forward to. He doesn't want to spend any more time than he has to in the bleak, empty world of the victim's father, Iron Mike, Kovac's old mentor and a department legend. It's too much like looking into his own future. But Kovac has a sixth sense for crime, and it's burning. Together with his partner, the wisecracking, ambitious Nikki Liska, Kovac begins to dig at the too-neat edges of Fallon's death, uncovering one motive and one suspect after another. The shadows of suspicion fall deeply on not only the city's power elite, but into the very heart of the police department itself....
