THE CORONATION OF BALIOL. Baliol was crowned at Scone on St Andrew's day, the 30th of November, 1292, by Sir John de St John, who was commissioned by Edward to officiate for the infant Earl of Fife, who possessed the hereditary right of conducting the King to the royal seat -- the stone anciently known by the name of Jacob's pillar, upon which it had been the invariable practice, since the days of Fergus, to place the monarchs of Scotland on the occasion of their coronation. In the following month he repaired to New- castle-on-Tyne, where Edward then sojourned. According to the custom of the Anglo-Norman courts, the prelates and nobles of the kingdom were obliged by their tenures to attend their sovereigns at Christmas, Easter, and Whitsuntide, f And it was, doubtless, in accordance with this practice that Baliol, who had so lately declared himself to be the vassal of Edward, now visited his court, in order to be present at the first of these festivals.
