Greer is (according to the back cover text) a 32-degree Mason, a Grand Archdruid, and a practicing occultist, but despite (or possibly because of) these facts, the book views secret societies with a refreshingly skeptical eye. I particularly enjoyed his accounts of the true story behind the Priory of Sion, and of what the mysterious Baphomet was which the Knights Templar supposedly worshipped. (His Shakespeare entry was much too credulous, though.) Each entry has useful references for further research, and there's a 13-page bibliography. Highly recommended for both the casual reader and a beginning but serious student of secret societies.
