Ella feels too much of a star to be ask to do menial work at the circus, so she hides to be bribed back and is left behind. Following the railroad tracks to eventually get to the circus, Ella stops to rest at a farm and is captured by the crabby farmer and makes her work. Having learned her lesson Ella makes her escape back to the circus where she is now willing to do everything. I love Bill Peet's art work and stories.

Sweetly clever rhyming tale about a very selfish elephant who runs away from her life in the circus in search of something better. Instead she finds something much worse and learns that maybe life wasn't so bad after all.
