There has never been enough money at Bretton since the estate was finished in the eighteenth century. But the Brettons have clung to their home through the efforts of three determined women: tough, self-sacrificing Harriet, who made sweeping economies; her daughter-in-law Deborah, who hated her lofty social position; and now, in the 1920's, her granddaughter Paddy, forbidden by her father to marry the man she loved, and facing the most dire financial straits yet. As she struggles to save her home, Paddy must finally confront the age-old conflict with Bretton's strong-willed tenant farmers, the Chances, and the memories and scandals that link the two families.
