But tragedy strikes anyway, and Mark is wounded in the desert by Beckett's cruel gang, and Gib, as strange a friend as Snively, takes him to his marshland home for nursing. There the 3 join forces, with friendly elves and gnomes as accomplices, and set out to discover the haunt of the Elders.
Beckett's men pursue, and a terrible pilgrimage is undertaken, enchanted by hell-hounds, witches, and finally, the Caretaker--who resolves all questions in a chilling climax.
