This book was pretty emotionally difficult but beautifully written. I feel I struggled with the moral questions (can we forgive murderers and rapists if they have their own traumatic pasts? Can a priest who sleeps with a 16 year old be sympathetic if they have a genuine relationship?), but in a book about prisons, surviving abuse, and the death penalty, heavy subjects like this should probably be expected. In the end I'm not sure I agree with the ways the author represented each of these issues, but it was a thought-provoking, moving and lyrical read nonetheless.

"The Enchanted" presents a sad and rather dark story in the language and rhythm of fable; the result is strangely beautiful and compelling. It is utterly unlike anything else I've read, and weaves imagery that stays with you long after you've finished reading.
