Great novel about the Civil War in the state of Missouri. Both sides killing military and civilians. Women were thrown in prison for simply cooking a meal for a member of the opposite sides army.
Adair Colley is sent to a Union prison after her father is arrested for the unfounded accusation of being a southern supporter. The ordeal she goes through is horrible. In prison she meets Major Neumann who is her interrogator trying to get her to confess to some crime so he can release her. After she refuses he convinces her to escape. They make arrangements to meet near her home when the war is over.
The writing style is unusual and I thought about stopping reading but I pushed forward and then the story started to grab me to the point that I could not put it down.
