"An English Murder" is a classic English cozy mystery. If you like Agatha Christie you will enjoy this who-dun-it plus learn about "old English politics". The bulter, the professor, the dying Lord, the family members and the guest all lend into creating the background in solving the mysterious deaths. Of course, it doesn't help to be snowed in with no contact to the outside world. A great mystery!!
I foresaw the ending, but then I have the advantage of reading it 50+ years after it was published, when perhaps the average reader was less cynical. Nice background, and portrayal of English manners with the funny little foreigner Dr. Bottwink to observe, comment on and enjoy.
A good old fashioned English mystery. It was quick paced and a nice light read. I think this is my favorite of all this author's books.
Another very enjoyable murder by Cyril Hare takes place in a snowed-in English manor over Christmas. I have to admit I was surprised as to who got knocked off. So there wasn't the usual happy romantic ending so often seen in British mysteries. And I was really upset when the person who I wanted to be the killer ended up dead too.
What a shame, as with this book I think I've read all of Hare's novels.
