I have no idea why it took me 5 weeks to read this book! I was intrigued by the premise ever since I first saw the giveaway listed. I entered it quite a few times hoping I'd win. When I finally received it, I jumped in right away. And then I lost interest. What lost me at first was the number of characters. And a few of them would narrate chapters, in third person. But there was also the main narrator, who told the story in 1st person. I was quite a few chapters in before they really hinted at who was telling the story. The first 5 chapters were spent picturing a boy, when in actuality, it was Sarah telling the story. Another problem with the characters that I had was how many there were, most with weird alien names. And most of those weird alien's went by some other name, or a nickname. It got confusing trying to keep them all straight.
Eventually I was able to figure out who everyone was, and when they were narrating. I was still interested in the story, however, I found that the book was not really about what I thought it was. It was about the eviction, but I was thinking it would feature more about the prank. The prank was hardly mentioned after it was completed. I wish there had been more follow-up on what the kids did, and how the locals reacted to it.
The other thing that bothered me, was how long it took to read. I would start reading it, but when it came time to put it down at the end of the day, I wasn't ever in any big hurry to get back to it. 5 weeks is a REALLY long time for me to get through a book. I think the last one that took me that long was The Count of Monte Cristo! Anyway, despite the weeks it took to complete, the book read really fast. Maybe because it all takes place in just over 24 hours, I don't know. There was one point, when I was about 80% done, I realized that it felt like I should have been in the first 30% still. I didn't remember reading all of that. I even had to skim through those chapters to make sure I hadn't skipped them.
I'm sure it seems like I'm complaining about this book a lot, but I can't figure out if I liked it or not. I didn't not like it. It wasn't bad. I think there were just too many problems for me to Like It like it.
